The Center for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications (CASA) at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is part of the FFSO project. Its major research objective is to develop new, and to improve existing, mathematical (both analytical and numerical) methods for a wide range of applications in science and engineering. In particular, for the FFSO project, they are focused on accurate modelling of freeform optics.

Group Leaders

Wilbert IJzerman
After finishing his MSc in applied physics in 1995 and MSc in applied mathematics in 1996 Wilbert obtained his PhD in applied mathematics in 2000, all at the University of Twente. He is also the head of the sector Lighting Technology at Signify Research. In this role he is responsible for the long-term technology roadmap and execution thereof for all lighting products. He is (co-)author of over 50 granted US patents. Wilbert is also a Member of the Industrial Advisory Committee of the European Optical Society.

Jan ten Thije Boonkkamp
Jan ten Thije Boonkkamp received his MSc from the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente in 1984. He then started working at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, Amsterdam where he remained until 1988, when he joined Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. In 1991, he joined TU/e. Jan publishes regularly in leading journals, such as the Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Journal of Computational Physics and Journal of Scientific Computing.

Martijn Anthonissen
Martijn Anthonissen studied mathematics at TU/e. After his master’s program he was selected for the Japan Prizewinners Program, a one-year postgraduate course for twenty recently graduated Dutch students. Within this framework he lived in Tokyo and worked at the Hitachi Group Headquarters. Upon returning to the Netherlands, Martijn obtained his PhD doing research on numerical combustion. He currently works as an assistant professor. His research is on numerical methods for partial differential equations, in particular in the field of illumination optics. Martijn teaches a variety of mathematics courses for students of many departments within TU/e. He has also worked for Eindhoven School of Education and has managed the graduate program in Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Ph.D. Students

Maikel Bertens
Maikel completed both his Bachelor in Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics followed by a Master’s in Applied Mathematics at the TU/e. After a year of working with lidar systems in the automotive industry, he returned to the TU/e as a PhD student in 2019 to solve the hyperbolic Monge-Ampère equation for optical applications.

Robert van Gestel (graduated 2023)
Robert completed his MSc in Applied Physics at TU/e in May 2019. A month later, he started working as a PhD student within the Scientific Computing group. His focus is on developing numerical methods to solve Liouville’s equation, as an alternative method to ray tracing.

Vì Kronberg (graduated 2024)
Vì’s background is in (engineering) physics, and they received their MSc diploma from Karlstad University in Sweden early June 2019. They joined TU/e as a PhD student during the middle of September 2019. Their present research concerns modelling scattering in the context of freeform optical design.

Lotte Romijn (graduated 2022)
Lotte Romijn completed a Bachelor of Science at Amsterdam University College (AUC) in the Netherlands, followed by a Master’s degree (summa cum laude) in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at the University of Melbourne in Australia. She joined TU/e as a PhD student in 2017. Her focus is on developing numerical methods to solve generalized Monge-Ampère equations for a range of optical systems.
